Things to do in Bogota

There are so many interesting things to do in Bogota, it can be overwhelming for a first-timer to know where to start. Colombia isn’t a country for rushing things, so use these suggestions as a guide but most importantly, go wherever the wind takes you in Colombia’s capital city.

Learn about the History

Centro histórico is the best place to start your visit since getting to know this city and its history is one of the best things to do in Bogota. Bogota’s friendly local life congregates in the city’s center square, Plaza de Bolivar. This area, called La Candelaria, is full of charming colonial architecture, an ornate cathedral, and plenty of local eateries. Nearby, visit the brilliant Gold Museum to learn the true story behind El Dorado, the legend of Colombia’s not-so-mythical city of gold and riches.

Explore the markets

You’ll find markets of all kinds scattered around Bogota. If you’re around on a Sunday, Mercado de las Pulgas is one of the most beloved flea markets around. With a city as old and intricate as Bogota, it’s amazing what kinds of antique treasures its residents dig up to sell. You’ll find vintage records, toys, antiques, jewelry, and pretty much anything else you can dream up.

Get the best views

Bogota’s beloved church-topped mountain is called Monserrate and a journey to the top of it is a must-view while you’re in town. A religious pilgrimage site, there are trails to climb up the mountain (that are about 2 miles long). Otherwise, you can take a cable car or funicular to reach the top so you can appreciate the breathtaking views over Bogota. There are also gardens and restaurants to enjoy up at the peak.

Party like a Colombian

Ready to let loose Colombian style? Bogota has endless options for lively restaurants and nightclubs. Head to Zona Rosa after sunset to have your choice of eateries, bars, and nightclubs. Whatever you’re vibe, this is the place to find it.

However, there’s nowhere that quite compares to Andrés Carne de Res. This massive family-friendly restaurant is a dining experience you won’t soon forget. With a menu full of South American specialties, take your pick from delicious arepas and mouth-watering steaks. Whacky art covers the walls and after dark, an electric atmosphere takes over with Latin music and dancing.

Visit the underground cathedral

The famous cathedral of Zipaquirá, located two hundred meters underground, was built inside the town’s old salt mine. This is a favorite place of Colombians with over 40,000 of them visiting the cathedral each month. In addition to experiencing Zipaquirá, you can also spend some time in the little square to enjoy the charming colonial architecture of this salt-mining town.

Now that you have an idea of the best things to do in Bogota, head over to Troupe to start ironing out the details of your Colombia trip.
